Biddy
Ball
5 & 6
Keansburg Youth
Association has a newly formed basketball division, it is called
Biddy Ball. It's like the sport we all know, except they play
on small courts with the baskets lowered and referees are fairly lax in
enforcing the rules. Biddy Ball introduces children to the
sport of basketball. Coaches educate players about the rules
throughout the game, as well as reinforcing teamwork and skills in a fun
and supportive environment. This innovative program is designed
for children who have not been involved in any structured learning
program or would like to try playing basketball. Using this
format, the aim is to teach players some basic skills, rules and jargon
and follow-up immediately with application exercises within the context
of a team in game situations.
It is fun; the kids
love it and from time to time the parents’ hopes of seeing development
pay off. It's quite amusing to watch, but yeah, you haven't seen a
ball hog until you see a kid take the inbound pass, "dribble"
up the court, stop and see where they are in relation to the basket,
"dribble" some more, repeat until they're under the basket,
then shoot the ball. Oh they're supposed to pass three times before
taking a shot, but that’s all part of the fun.
